Tuesday July 26th 2011 – West Cape News

THE Mandela Park Backyarders say they have “proof of corruption” in a Khayelitsha

While RDP house allocations have been the source of protest, such as here in Mandela Park in September last year, investigations find that up to 80 percent of them are not occupied by the rightful owners. Photo: Siyabonga Kalipa/WCN

housing project and have called for the “immediate” resignation of Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela.

The call follows the organisation’s online publication of results of their investigation into the occupation of houses in the Mandela Park Housing Project, of which 150 houses out of a planned 950 have been completed.

In a press statement dated July 23, the Mandela Park Backyarders listed 12 RDP houses they found to be “irregularly or corruptly allocated”. Continue reading

Backyarders present clear evidence of corruption in Mandela Park in letter to Ward 94 Councillor

Mandela Park Backyarders Press Statement
23 July 2011

(A version of this statement was originally sent to Ward 94 Cllr Patrick Mngxunyeni and REC Sectretary Vuyiso Tyhalisisu)

Housing Allocation Concern

As Mandela Park Backyarders we have observed the ongoing housing development taking place in our own community since it was unblocked in 2009. Since the development started it has been characterised by lack of accountability and transparency. Moreover we had an imposition of steering committee mandated to this task without the consultation of our community. This led to the allocation of houses to some individuals because they were related or sharing the same surname as the genuine beneficiary. Many of the houses have also been allocated in an irregular and/or corrupt manner. Continue reading

Backyarders Solidarity Statement – 19 July 2011

Mandela Park Backyarders would like to congratulate Abahlali Basemjondolo for striking back against the government to free their comrades. Struggling for justice has proved to be packed with obstacles put before us by those we put in power through ballot paper.

We will not longer shout and cry without action. The time to fold hands and watch our people being downplayed by greedy and cunning politicians should come to an end.

We wish, that at today’s press conference, the voice of the poor and marginalised people of Abahlali Basemjondolo are able to transcend over that of oppressors and invoke courage to all to say Enough is Enough, is Genoeg, Kwanele!

Open letter to Madam Mayor Patricia de Lille on the Mandela Park Land and Housing Crisis

19 July 2011

Dear Madam Mayor,

While the Mandela Park Backyarders continue to receive no attention from the Western Cape Human Settlement MEC (Bonginkosi Madikizela), private property owners continue to monopolise the land that is already in short supply in Mandela Park. It appears that some officials refuse to learn from their past mistakes of ignoring the poor solely because they have gained politically in the process.

We believe the MEC for housing (Bonginkosi Madikizela) held several secret meetings with the Gugulethu backyarders recently where ANC, ward 97(Councilor Mthwalo Mkhutswana) was invited to discuss the housing development which the department intent to commence in Mandela Park. Continue reading

DA council orders man to raze his brick house in squatter area

THE City of Cape Town says a man who built a brick house in an informal settlement must tear it down because it is a safety hazard.

Though the city has no intention of demolishing any of the shacks in the West Beach informal settlement in Cape Town’s Du Noon, they have given Dayi Mondreki, 48, until today to tear down his house or else they will demolish it.

Mondreki was lauded by his neighbours for building a better home for his four children after living for 11 years in a rickety shack.

But the city’s anti-land invasion unit head Stephen Hayward confirmed that the city had served Mondreki with a notice to demolish his house.

“If a building collapses and kills someone and if that building did not comply with the health and safety regulations, the owner will be held responsible,” Hayward said.

He said the land belonged to the city and as such people could not do anything without getting permission.

Hayward did not say why there was no problem with shacks that were on the city’s land and which could also fall down and injure people.

The notice has not only enraged Mondreki but also his neighbours, who say their living conditions are bad. They were planning to emulate Mondreki by building brick houses on their own rather than waiting to receive RDP houses.

Mondreki’s wife, Nobuntu, said five city officials stormed into their newly built brick house last week and demanded an explanation as to who had given them permission to build a brick house on the city’s land.

She said they were then given seven days notice to demolish their new house.

Mondreki said he built his house with bricks he had salvaged from dumping sites.

“I only bought cement. We decided to build a brick house because it is winter and when it rains our shack floods,” he said.

Beatrice Mtati, 46, said residents in the area had vowed at a meeting to defend Mondreki’s house.

“Instead of improving our living conditions they want to make our lives difficult. We will also build brick houses because our living conditions are so bad,” said Mtati.

She accused the city of gunning for a man who was trying to uplift himself, instead of doing its job and fixing the communal flush toilets that broke down in June and have since been emitting an “unbearable stench”.

Dlamini Mdlalo, 58, who has lived in the informal settlement for 10 years, said by providing his family with a better home Mondreki had shown that he was a man.

The ANC’s fast and furious parliamentary deliberation over the Info Bill

In the face of sustained opposition to the Protection of Information Bill (better known as the “protection of information from investigative journalism bill”), the ANC is pushing the speedometer needle well into the danger zone as it chases deadlines at breakneck speed. But the question remains: Will it swap its Ferrari for its trusted bulldozer in the end anyway? By T O MOLEFE. Continue reading
