Solidarity: We “invaded” Rondebosch Common…but only the police destroyed the fynbos.

Statement by those who occupied the common
Take Back the Commons Movement
28 January 2012

We did our best. We had everything stacked against us.

The might of the South African Police Force, the paranoia of some Rondebosch rate payers, and the arrogance of our protester turned mayor Patricia de Lille.

Legal march and gathering

As a former activist, de Lille should know the law with regards to gatherings. She should already know that she can’t ban a protest without meeting with us first and without credible threats of violence that could not be assuaged through the meeting. This was an illegal act and a violation of our Constitutional rights and the specific procedure that the City is required to follow according to the Gatherings Act.

It was also clearly illegal that they stopped and threatened people who protested in small groups, given that only groups of 15 or more constitute a legal gathering.

Today’s events

The police came for us in Manenberg, in Bishop Lavis, in Kraaifontein, and in Athlone. They came for us in groups of 50, in groups of 20, ten, five and even two. They penned us inside our townships saying we were not welcome in the leafy suburbs. They arrested two of us in Manenberg. Our buses got rerouted back home. Continue reading

Letter to the Khayelitsha Development Forum and request for follow-up meeting

Note: To our supporters of our struggle and to the media, the following letter was sent to the Khayelitsha Development Forum. They seem to have ignored our overtures towards having an open and productive discussion with them. It is unfortunate that they continue to claim that they represent us but yet are not even willing to meet with us! We, as the unemployed community of Khayelitsha, hope that our actions will force the democratisation of the development process where we as the community have a say.

16 January 2012

Attention: The chairperson of KDF

CC: Secretary

Request for a follow up meeting with Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) Continue reading

Ayanda Kota: We are all in the same boat

Solidarity Statement with the Unemployed People’s Movement in Grahamstown
13 January 2012

As Backyarders we view the security forces including the police as part of those who are suppressing poor people from raising in public genuine issues that affect us. The state including SAPS maintain the fear of a possible mass rebellion and are embarking on psychological intimidation and physical brutality against us.

As social activists, we are not shaken by the actions of government. It is clear this government does not like its own people but only appreciates those who always follow their line. If you are strongly and actively opposing the agenda of those in power, then you get punished.

Ayanda Kota is unfortunately one of those target by the state. He was arrested and then assault in full view of his child and others at the Grahamstown Police Station. Continue reading

for the newly-built Khayelitsha Hospital.

This was disclosed by a District Health Services official after about 50 angry Mandela Park residents protested outside of the hospital yesterday, claiming they were not given preference for jobs at the new facility.

Their protest came as Khayelitsha ward councillors said unemployment in the township was increasing every year.

Principal Communications Officer for the District Health Services, Sithembiso Magubane said a total of 329 posts for nursing and general staff had been available at the new hospital. Continue reading

The Khayelitsha 10 to appear in Court this morning

11 January 2012

The Khayelitsha 10, arrested during the protest outside new Khayelitsha Hospital yesterday morning will appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate court today at 09h00.

The community has vowed to intensify their protest until their members are released.

This is another sad day in South Africa where the state responds to peaceful civil disobedience with brutality. It must be put on record that the reason residents were so upset at yesterday’s protest was because government leaders failed to give an honest and transparent account of the employment situation and also because subsequently resident’s C.V.’s were found in the dustbin.
